Flam is on the agenda for almost everyone whether they arrive by road, rail or cruise liner.
At the suggestion of the Tourist Info in Bergen we decided that rather than just take a train ride up and back , we would take the bikes and ride back.

The railway line was built in the 1900s and was finished by 1940.  Its purpose to enable access to the isolated farming communities of the valley.  Flam is at sea level and the last station Myrdal is about 840 metres.  Over the roughly 20 km length it climbs about 1 metre in every 18 metres including one tunnel that turns through 180 degrees.

There are 20 tunnels, 18 of which were completed by hand taking about 1 month to dig a metre.
