Saltstraumen is a small strait with the strongest tidal current in the world. It is located southeast of the town of Bodø. Up to 400 million cubic metres of water at speeds up to 40 KM/hr rush through a narrow opening at the mouth of the fjord. The mouth is only about 150 metres wide and joins the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord. Whirlpools form that can be up to 10 metres wide and 5 metres deep.
