Driving anti-clockwise from Reykjavik - leaving late afternoon on 13 May - we overnighted 2 nights at Bitra Guesthouse near Selfoss, then Hof Hotel, Bakkageroi Guesthouse at Borgarfjordur, Stong Guesthouse near Myvatn, Hvammstanger, Stykkisholmur and back to Reykjavik. There are no motels as we know them but hotels and guesthouses dotted around the island - some apparently in the middle of nowhere. The countryside is harsh but spectacular. Lots of small farms dotted in isolated locations and at this time of the year (May) all with new lambs springing about newly mown fields. Many keep Icelandic horses although to what purpose we have been unable to figure out. There are a lot of horses across the lonely paddocks of Iceland. Roads are generally good with some of the major secondary roads being dirt - although all were in good nick. The main highway - No 1 - which circumnavigates the island is about 1350 km long. Weather wise we were lucky with several sunny days and no days of any steady rain. Otherwise it was generally overcast with the curious result that most of the photos looked like they were taken in black & white. But when the sun came out - beautiful. Temperatures ranged from 2C to about 12C - with most days having a biting breeze. Inside everything was always heated. CLICK ON THE 1ST PHOTO OF EACH GROUP TO ENLARGE then use FORWARD ARROW.
