Caen Hill Flight

8/5/2014

After the good weather of the weekend it turned a bit windy and showery.  Driving around the countryside, we are getting familiar with the local roads - Pocket Earth and Ipad always at the ready however.  Visited Devizes to do some washing and the picked the only day of the week that the Laudromat was closed!.

Pick of today was a walk along the Caen Hill Flight section - a series of locks on the Kennett and Avon Canal west of Devizes .  There are 29 locks in the flight which raise the canal height  237 feet in 2 miles. We walked - in the constant showers - from Marsh Lane Bridge to Lock 44 and return.
It takes 5-6 hours for a boat to travel the whole 29 locks and luckily as we topped the rise there was a boat about to enter lock 44.
