bruges, Brugge or Brügge

Bruges is the largest city in West Flanders - the Flemish region of Belgium.  It is similar to Amsterdam in that it also has an extensive network of canals.  We camped at a motorhome carpark which was a 15 min walk through a park to the Market Square.  There was no limit on the length of stay and we had a very entertaining discussion with the Belgian couple parked next door in their huge (and permanent) motorhome.

Bruges was first mentioned in 820AD and has been a noted port for centuries.  Eventually it was cut off from the sea by silting.  The port for Bruges is now Zeebrugge (Bruges-on-sea).  Having watched the movie "In Bruges" it was hard to wander around the square with scenes coming to mind!  A lovely city to wander around.

The belfry has a 48 bell carillon and employs a full-time carilloneur to play at regular intervals - these could heard all through the back lanes!
