We thought this was a fishing and ferry port but were surprised to find quite a scattered built up area over the coastline leading into town. Another surprise was the camping area which was essentially a car park on the waterfront within walking distance of town.
The older part of Alesund was rebuilt after a dreadful fire destroyed the town in 1904. The rebuilding was financed by Kaiser Wilhelm II and many of the buildings were decorated in Neo-classical style with lots of pastel colours and turrets.
